President & Chief Instructor
Zachary R. Pugh is the driving force behind Pugh Self-Protection & Combatives, where he leads with a mission to enhance personal safety through superior training. His journey began in 2002 as a student of Brooks Karate School in West Winfield, NY, where he earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in American Goju Karate. Over time, Zachary transitioned his focus to the self-protection component of the martial arts, studying extensively under Tony Torres with the Functional Edge System.
In addition, Zachary has trained in Blauer Tactical Systems, Defense Lab, Keysi Fighting Method, and Ju Jitsu, blending elements of each into a practical, real-world approach to personal safety. He has also earned numerous Instructor Certifications through the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), including General Topics, Firearms, Conducted Energy Device, Patrol Rifle, and Aerosol Restraint.
With over 20 years of experience in self-protection, combatives, and safety instruction—and serving as a police officer since 2011—Zachary has built a reputation for delivering training that is realistic, hands-on, and designed to maximize survival in the most critical situations.
As President and Chief Instructor, Zachary has trained thousands of individuals—from educators and healthcare professionals to corporate teams and community groups—helping them build the skills and confidence necessary to respond effectively in high-stress events. He is also an authorized dealer of the ELS911 Emergency Labeling System, bringing cutting-edge wayfinding and safety solutions to schools, businesses, and houses of worship across the region.
Zachary is the creator of the Ch.A.D. (Charge & Attack while Distracting) and S.O.S. (Seek safe area, Out-of-sight, Strategically attack) response protocols, developed to overcome the limitations of mainstream “Run-Hide-Fight” style programs. His unique approach blends biomechanics, human physiology, and scenario-based practice to ensure participants don’t just learn concepts—they master lifesaving physical skills.
